CEREC Crown Procedure:

    1. Tooth Preparation

In the initial consultation, dentist will assess your teeth and determine what CEREC restoration you need: crown, inlay, onlay, veneer, bridge.

Dentist will prepare your tooth for restoration by removing the decay and weakened part of tooth.

    2. Digital Scanning Of Teeth

After the preparation, tooth is scanned with digital scanner (Primescan) to create 3 dimensional image of tooth, called digital impression. Then CEREC software convert the digital impression into 3 dimensional virtual model which is used to design your dental crown.

    3. Designing And Milling Of Dental Crowns

Once 3 dimensional virtual model is generated, dentist will design your crown by using CEREC software. CEREC designed crowns are more accurate and precise as compared to traditional method of making the crowns. It will take few minutes for dentist to finalise the design and then digital design is sent to inhouse CEREC milling machine (Primemill) to mill the crown. Crown is milled from ceramic block which has similar shade to natural teeth. Crown fabrication is done inside the dental office and take around 20 minutes to complete. Once the crown is milled, it is glazed in the furnace or polished depending upon the material used, and is ready to be fitted and bonded on your tooth. You can even watch the crown being milled in Primemill unit in our practice.

    4. Fitting Crowns In Mouth

Dentist will check the fitting of the crown in mouth, Once the right fit is achieved, dentist will prepare the crown for bonding by etching or sand blasting the fitting surface of crown which helps in bonding. Crown is bonded over the tooth with resin cement and margins polished after removal of excess cement. You will get new crown in one day.

How long does it take?

Usually, our visits for single CEREC restorations take 1.50 hours. This is usually only 20 minutes of drilling and the rest of the time includes designing the new ceramic crown, milling, polishing or glazing, and finally bonding onto your tooth.

Sometimes it is appropriate to do multiple crowns or veneers in one visit. We would then reserve an entire morning or afternoon to peacefully work on a set of multiple teeth together. As always, we offer complimentary consultations to meticulously plan each treatment and appointment for you.

Who is suitable for CEREC veneers?

CEREC Veneers allows dentists to cosmetically enhance your smile with minimal or no drilling at all. This preserves the natural strength and health of your enamel and teeth. We will design a trial smile to ensure your new veneers are both complimentary to your smile and your face. We love doing cosmetic smile makeovers.

For more elderly patients who no longer wish to explore orthodontic options, CEREC can create a smile they have always wanted but had seemingly been impossible with traditional methods.

Your bright smile is a sign of our success!

What’s the longevity of CEREC restorations and crowns?

CEREC restorations are a permanent, definitive treatment option. These are designed for long-term performance in a functioning mouth. Because it is bonded onto natural tooth structure, therefore tooth can still be susceptible to decay. Therefore, regular dental examination and hygiene is still necessary to maintain optimum dental health. Research shows a well-designed and placed CEREC crown can last over two decades. If you have a bruxism (tooth grinding or clenching) habit it might be worthwhile to wear a night guard to protect your teeth. Even natural teeth wear down faster with these habits.

Can I eat normally after getting a CEREC crown?

CEREC crown is used to mimic biological teeth. The more we recreate nature and restore ideal anatomy the healthier and more predictable our outcome can be. Each CEREC crown is bonded individually. You can clean, floss, eat on your tooth after a CEREC crown as per normal. A well-designed CEREC crown should feel comfortable from the very first fitting. There is a super accurate 3D scan that captures both jaws in your mouth. The relation between the two jaws are simulated on the computer software. It would be wise to avoid using your teeth to bite down on extremely hard items such as shells and bones. These can even crack natural teeth.
